Welcome to Katherine

Katherine is the Northern Territory’s third largest town, 320 kilometres south of Darwin. The town is on the banks of the Katherine River, which flows from nearby Nitmiluk National Park, through the famous Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge, a natural system of 13 gorges.

Visitors can explore the gorge on a guided boat cruise, by hiring a canoe and paddling upstream, or from a helicopter for a bird’s eye view.  Learn the pastoral history of the region at Katherine Outback Experience or purchase locally sourced Aboriginal art; both just minutes from the centre of Katherine.  Katherine plays a significant role as a meeting place for regional Aboriginal communities and is a great place to gain a deeper insight into Aboriginal history and culture.

Described as where the Outback meets the tropics, Katherine is full of gorges, waterfalls, thermal springs and ancient cultures.

Access: The Katherine region is an easy three-hour drive south of Darwin on sealed roads.  A NT Parks Pass is required to enter the Nitmiluk National Park near Katherine.
