Welcome to Kakadu National Park
Kakadu National Park is Australia’s largest national park, with dual UNESCO World Heritage status for both its natural and cultural values. Covering nearly 20,000 square kilometres, it is just 3 hours’ drive from Darwin, and ideally suited to multi day touring with several tour operators operating out of Darwin. Day touring from Darwin is also an option but it is highly recommended to do this with a tour guide to get the most out of your visit.
Waterfalls tumbling down rock escarpments and remote walking trails are highlights, as is the important Aboriginal rock art sites featured throughout the park. The Bininj and Mungguy people have called Kakadu home for 65,000 years, and visitors can see evidence of their ancient culture and preservation of the land throughout the park.
Kakadu’s vast rivers and wetlands are home to barramundi, crocodiles and hundreds of bird species. In the tropical summer months, rains connect the rivers, creeks and gorges, transforming the landscape into a green, water-filled oasis. Take a boat cruise on the Yellow Water Billabong and East Alligator River where visitors can learn about the many species of wildlife found here and the significance of these waterways to the local Aboriginal people.
Kakadu is popular year-round, and the different seasons all offer something special. Between May and October the nights are cool and the days are warm, and it’s easy to access everything in the park. From November to April (during tropical summer), access can be limited to some areas due to increased wet season rainfall.
The main town in Kakadu is Jabiru which is home to around 300 people, with a supermarket, petrol station and medical clinic. There is a range of accommodation options in Jabiru and Cooinda.
Access: Kakadu National Park is about three hours’ drive (256km) from Darwin, with sealed roads all the way. Visitors can join day and multi-day tours that run regularly from Darwin. A Park Pass from Parks Australia Is required to enter Kakadu National Park.
